The raspberry PI is being used to help with ventilators because they are easy to source and they can get a lot of them, they are only used to help with small basic tasks but they are very powerful and can keep repeating these tasks all day long. I am not sure if they are being put to use right now but I know that they are testing them to see if they can be used as ventilators or not.
There are a lot of problems with this because I know some people who are using raspberry PI's that are malfunctioning and they are only doing small tasks like watering plants, they have got to be shut down and started back up again. No big deal right. Well, no it's not if it is just being used for small basic tasks like watering plants but when they are being put to use to help with people's breathing and then they have got to be shut down and started back up again then this could cause someone to lose their life.
I think a lot more research has got to into this first before they use them as ventilators and they have got to make sure that they can be trusted to support 24/7 use before they are put to test on human life. If they use something like a USB to boot the Raspberry PI system then it should be okay because most USB's are suitable to run boot programs but when they start cutting the size and use something like an SD card to boot the program I can see them running into a lot of problems because most SD cards are not suitable for the use of a bootable program. I hope that they manage to succeed with the testing of this because I can see this being very useful for the medical industry and could have been implemented in the medical field a lot sooner. As always form me...
Stay Safe IFB :)
